EARS meets at T.C. Furlong
27885 Irma Lee Circle - Unit 101 Lake Forest, IL
847-367-9588
Tuesday Nov. 25 7:30p.m
Directions
We'll hold our annual presidential elections. Each candidate will have an
opportunity to address the membership, and voting will continue through out
the meeting.
Your faithful EARS secretary (but with hairy legs), Mike Tanko, reached out
to Prez Mary with a great meeting location idea whose time has finally come!
With riders becoming more complex, often requesting gear that was typically
only found in the studio like ProTools. Jim Mingo, of the highly respected
T.C. Furlong Company will discuss what it takes to successfully do
Professional S.R. in this day and age. We'll also have the opportunity to
check out the Yamaha PM 5000 console, the latest in the long line of
workhorse desks. This generation features digital control of the analog
circuitry and, of course, automation. We'll examine the tasty Meyer M2d
"Compact Curvilinear Array", EAW's KF730 Line Array, and "tons" (his words)
of outboard gear! Come on out to show your support for EARS as we again
welcome our fellow specialists in the SR craft and try to grab "the first
split"! -Gary Khan-
AES Recap Part II
by Danny Leake
DW Fearn is still making his tube preamps. He is also offering a tube EQ
that features the same "over the top" component to component construction.
John Hardy, as always, was there with my favorite mike pre, the M1.
Mike wise, there are some new "Classics" coming from Brauner, Telefunken,
Soundelux, Audio Technica, and many others.
As for the "death" of Analog, Studer sold five 827 24 track machines during
the show
Aside from the "toy Store", there were also some great workshops and Special
Events:
The Recording Academy had a panel that discussed the 45th Grammy Awards
broadcast which was the first live telecast broadcast in HDTV and 5.1
discrete surround.
The AES had two "Platinum Producer" Panels. One was moderated by Ron Fair
with producers like Jack Joseph Puig. The other, moderated by Bob Owsinski,
zeroed in on surround mixing issues.
Folks, this is the main reason I go to the show. I remember attending a
workshop years ago when a person gave a paper about making reverb via
Digital manipulation. Most of the people in the room thought he had drunk
his lunch. How has Digital Reverb change the way we use ambience in our
recordings? I found out about it years before it arrived during an AES
workshop.
Speaking of Digital Reverb, they have reissued the old Ursa Major Space
Station, only now it fits in the palm of your hand.
BTW- They had an exhibit, "Vinyl goes Digital", which had just about every
"Vintage" Digital format ever made: 3M, Mitsubishi X-80, F1s, etc. They even
cut a live band on all formats and compared the sound. I told Phil Ramone
that I didn't start to feel old until I entered that room. Why? I had cut
sessions on just about all of those dead formats:-)
Well, that's about it for now. I haven't begun to cover everything that was
there. Anybody who needs more info, just email me at DRLUrbanG@AOL.COM. I
have tons of Lit.
See ya in next year in San Francisco!
