EARS meets at Black Lion Audio
1800 W. Cuyler, Chicago, IL

Second Floor, East Wing

Tuesday, Sept. 30th, 7:30pm

Hey Hey!

EARS meets this month at Matt Newport's Black Lion Audio. Matt began in RF electronics and airport navigation systems. Black Lion Audio began in the business of modifications to audio gear in 2005 and has expanded to include new products in the last year. Besides their mods they're now making state of the art clocks and ADCs, at very affordable prices. Their mod of a Digi 002R has recently been used in the making of Altiverb's newest reverbs (Paramount's M room) and has been chosen by the Los Angeles Opera for their live recording setup. They've done mod work for tons of other folks, including George Landress, Wes Dooley, Earl Cohen, Los Angeles Opera, Sony Scoring, Trevor Gilchrist, Marty Frasu/David Newman, Sony BMG Classical, Warner Brothers, Terry Setter (Chameleon Labs), Derrick Carter, Marcy Playground, Jason Lytle/Grandaddy, Lee Hester, Owen Biddle,  Ira Ingber, James Demeter, Disney, Rick Heil, Dave Newfeld, James Mercer (Shins), David Pajo (Slint, Zwan), Ming Freeman, and many others. I've been talking to Matt about a meeting for some time and I'm very excited to finally see it happen.
They're at roughly Irving Park and Ravenswood, on the West side of the Metra Tracks, right next to the Irving Park Brown Line stop (possibly closed?), down the block from the Montrose Brown Line stop, and also down the block from the Ravenswood Metra stop. There's parking in the back of the building along Belle Plain & Ravenswood, as well as in front. There's also tons of parking on the East side of the Metra Tracks and it's usually fairly empty at night.-KJH

Recap/Appreciation File

Big thanks and an EARS Cheer to our illustrious V.P., Michael Kolar, for hosting our annual BBQ last month. His bachelor pad and hospitality mixed with a great group of EARS members made for a wonderful time. Special thanks also to Sam Rodgers for manning the grill. All was delicious and I think we all had a great time. Thanks much, Mike, Sam, and all who attended.-KJH

October at Planet10Studios

It's becoming a tradition! The plan for next month is to check out the new and improved Planet10Studios. They're in a new location, with tons of new things going on, including a vintage Neve console. Stay tuned for details and keep that last Tuesday, the 28th, booked for EARS! - KJH

Suggestions Welcome!

There are endless good reasons to band together here as EARS. It can be whatever we want it to be. If you have any ideas for the EARdrum, our website, or future meetings, please email me. We still have a lot of great meeting plans lining up for the year, some website plans, and a lot of good fresh energy and hopes for a more vibrant, participatory EARS, so of course we're very interested in your input on everything EARS. Please! :) - KJH

Archives

Our Archives are again up to date. Check out the website for that and more EARS info. Also, I'd like to complete our files with the pre-2001 EARdrums. By my calculations we're missing the first 16 years! (Now minus that first one.) I know Timothy Powell has a year or so on his Metro-Mobile website but that still leaves a lot missing. If you happen to have your old paper copies or files you could get to me, I would love to get them online for posterity. Let me know. - KJH

Recap/Appreciation catch up

Also, please note that the EARdrum archive has been once again brought up to date. One thing that I'd hate to see missed is the Recap/Appreciation Files pertaining to our meetings at Stereophonic and Phase Recording. Please click on those links, scroll down, and check 'em out. - KJH

A note about our Website

I've noticed that it doesn't automatically update in some web browsers. If you're looking for something (such as the latest EARdrum) and it looks like old info, try reloading the page. I'll see what I can do about it, but it seems it would take a full redo to get it in a format that did this automatically for us.-KJH

Election

It’s also time again to be thinking about my least favorite subject, EARS politics. According to the Bylaws, nominations for president of EARS are to be held at the September meeting, so if you’re a dues-paid member and want to nominate someone, Tuesday’s the night. Check out the Bylaws on our website. In many ways, it still feels like we’ve only gotten started running things and we’ve barely had a chance to talk about the plans we have for the future, so of course I’d be happy to have the chance to continue for another year, hoping to make some good things happen. But perhaps someone wants to take the reigns for awhile? If anyone does step up, keep in mind that in Michael Kolar as a V.P., I've got the best of both worlds. He's got the experience of a Biden and the smile of a Palin. Oh yes, and he takes public transportation and can see Russia from his condo. How can we lose? :) -KJH

Dues!

Thanks to all who support EARS through paying their dues. Just as a reminder, they're due yearly by the October meeting and this is a prerequisite for voting and joining us for the Holiday Party and BBQ in August (and occasionally things like the Grammy Party), but they're always welcome. Dues checks (or cash, but no credit cards) for $25.00 can be made out to EARS and given to any of our officers or sent to the following address:

Engineering and Recording Society of Chicago, C/O Eric Roth, Treasurer, PO Box 98, Highland Park, IL 60035-0098 - KJH

A (few) (more) word(s) from the Prez...
or “Enough patience, let's rock!”

Well, I guess it's good news/bad news. The bad is that this is going out so close to the meeting date. The good is that you all had this Tuesday on your schedule already and even knew where the meeting would be. As a bonus, we're caught up, once again, on the website including the EARdrum archives.
It's just been an absolutely brutally busy season for me. Working overtime, teaching, in and out of town (and country!) and in full production mode on a major album project. But now I've managed to catch up and hope to keep it together from here.
Just for fun... Did everyone get a chance to see these interviews with Nigel Tufnel? Chalk one up for National Geographic.
And speaking of my musical heros, who did I happen to bump into in Amsterdam? Nile Rodgers. The next morning I woke up to XRT announcing the nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was shocked to hear them actually mock the idea of Chic being nominated, as if they were only a one hit wonder and the story was over there. Now while I don't agree with them, I understand them not fully embracing Metallica, but I would've thought the on-air personalities would understand the significance of their contribution, particularly Nile's. Shame on you, XRT. You're supposed to know better.
Ah yes, and EARS member Tom Yatabe of Clark Wire & Cable wanted me to extend this free Exhibits Only badge offer for the upcoming AES in S.F. Just go to this link.

See ya Tuesday!

At your service,
Kerry J Haps
